One of the hardest things to do while multitasking is watching a video. Even if you open a clip in a new window, you often have to keep moving it around your screen so it's not blocked by all the clutter on your screen. Mozilla 's new Picture-in-Picture feature for Firefox pins just about any video to your screen and prevents other tabs or windows from obscuring it.
Once you've downloaded the most recent version of Firefox, hover over a video and a blue "Picture-in-Picture" option will pop up.
Click the button and the video will open in a solitary player that you can move around as needed. The feature is only available on the Windows version of the browser, but it will hit Mac and Linux versions in January, according to Mozilla.
While having a second monitor would probably be the nicest way to keep one eye on a video and the other on work tasks, that's not an option for everyone, and would be next to impossible for laptop users on the go.

As always, we designed and developed this feature with user agency in mind. Specifically, we wanted to make it extremely easy for our users to exercise greater control over how they watch video content in Firefox.
To begin our design process, we looked back at the past. Inwe graduated Min-Vidone of our Test Pilot experiments. Thanks to the amazing Firefox User Research team, we had enough prior research to understand the main pain points in the user experience.
However, it was important to acknowledge that the competitive landscape had changed quite a bit since How were users and other browsers solving this problem already? What did users think about those solutions, and how could we improve upon them? Keeping these principles in mind helped us to evaluate all the different solutions, and was critical for the next phase. Once we had an understanding of how others were solving the problem, it was our turn to try.
We wanted to ensure discoverability without making the feature intrusive or annoying. Ultimately, we wanted to augment — and not disrupt — the experience of viewing video. This led us to building an interactive, motion-based prototype using Framer X. Our prototype provided a very effective way to get early feedback from real users.
We also took the time to re-learn the problems users are facing. And we learned a lot! The participants in our first study appreciated the feature, and while it did solve a problem for them, it was too hard to discover on their own. So, we rolled our sleeves up and tried again. We explored, brainstormed solutions, and discussed technical limitations until we had a version that offered discoverability without being intrusive.
After that, we spent months polishing and refining the final experience! From the beginning, our users have been part of the conversation. Early and ongoing user feedback is a critical aspect of product design.
It was particularly exciting to keep Picture-in-Picture in our Beta channel as we engaged with users like you to get your input. We listened, and you helped us uncover new blind spots we might have missed while designing and developing.
Early on, however, we faced a challenge when making the toggle visible on hover. These can be used to show a preview image of the underlying video before it begins, or to serve an interstitial advertisement. Sometimes transparent nodes are used for things that only become visible when the user hovers the player — for example, custom player controls. To work around these problems, we rely on the fact that the web page is being sent events from the browser engine.
At Firefox, we control the browser engine! Before sending out a mouse event, we can check to see what sort of DOM nodes are directly underneath the cursor re-using much of the same code that powers the elementsFromPoint function. Likewise, we use a similar technique to determine if the user is clicking on the toggle. We also use some simple heuristics based on the size, length, and type of video to determine if the toggle should be displayed at all.
In this way, we avoid showing the toggle in cases where it would likely be more annoying than not. The Picture-in-Picture player window itself is a browser window with most of the surrounding window decoration collapsed. Flags tell the operating system to keep it on top. Firefox is not the first desktop browser to ship a Picture-in-Picture implementation.Mozilla on Tuesday released Firefox 75 on schedule, unlike rivals Google and Microsoft, which postponed browser releases by weeks and scratched one version entirely because of the COVID pandemic.
The upgrade's most visible changes were to Firefox's address bar, which has been tricked out with several enhancements designed to make for more productive searches. The company's developers also patched a half dozen vulnerabilitiesthree labeled "High," Firefox's second-most-serious label.
As has regularly been the case, Mozilla addressed multiple memory safety flaws that criminals might have been able to exploit had they known of them. Because Firefox updates in the background, most users can just relaunch the browser to get the latest version. To manually update on Windows, pull up the menu under the three horizontal bars at the upper right, then click the help icon the question mark within a circle.
Choose "About Firefox. The resulting page shows that the browser is either up to date or describes the refresh process. This was the second version of Firefox to be released four weeks after its predecessor -- Mozilla last upgraded the browser on March In Septemberthe company announced it would accelerate the browser's release pace by shortening the interval between upgrades from six weeks to five as an interim step, finally to four weeks.
It was notable that Firefox 75 appeared on time, as it had been scheduled months earlier. Three weeks ago, first Google, then Microsoft, announced that they had temporarily suspended Chrome and Edge releases, respectively. Google put off Chrome 81's March 17 launchwhile Microsoft followed suit two days later. Although neither explicitly named the coronavirus and its resulting disruptions as the cause, their "adjusted work schedules" and "current global circumstances" descriptions blamed the pandemic.
A week later, Google said it would release Chrome 81 on April 7 it didscrub Chrome 82 from the launch list and debut Chrome 83 three weeks earlier than originally scheduled on May Microsoft again said its Edge -- like Chrome, built on technologies provided by the open-source Chromium project -- would mimic Google's browser's return.
Mozilla held to its calendar. And the two took shots at the competition, noting that their teams were familiar with working remotely. But Hildebrand and Deckelmann didn't promise that Mozilla would never deviate from the every-four-week tempo.
That's the case with Firefox 75, which adds to the address bar and that's about all. Among the improvements to the bar, one stood out: A click in the address bar now drops down a list of the first eight sites from the new tab page. The click-and-list function works at all times, saving the need to first open a new tab before zipping to a favorite site as long as the site is one of the first eight. To change the contents of the list or the order of the sites within it, users must add to or subtract from the thumbnails on the new tab page, or reshuffle those already there.
A click in Firefox 75's address bar displays the first eight sites from the new tab page. It's a slick shortcut. Other changes to the address bar's user interface UI and user experience UX included boldfaced keywords based on the search string being entered - "to narrow your search even further," Mozilla asserted - and a variable-sized field and font, both which expand when typing a search string and contract to standard size when finished.
Mozilla highlighted several developer- and enterprise-specific changes as well, ranging from the loading attribute on elements to support for client certificates from the macOS certificate store.

As a long-term Chrome user, from day one back inI've lost track of the number of times Mozilla have copied Google When are they actually going to come up with something original, instead of merely playing 'follow-my-leader'? Good point, but at least they have privacy down. I believe Opera has this feature before anyone else. I don't see this as being used by many. Reminds me of a TV I bought once that had the ability to show two channels at once. I quickly found out that it was impossible for me to actually keep up with what was happening on both screens at the same time.
For me, it was a useless gimmick. But then, I can't write with both hands at the same time, either. I have seen evidence of a very few being able to do that.
